Save-A-Landmark Program

By Bonnie McCulley

Many thanks to Hampton Hotel, whose volunteers helped restore the National Monument to the Forefathers, in Plymouth, Mass., 2004. Praise should be given to Hampton Hotel for incorporating preservation programs within their plans for America's cultural and historical landmarks.

This great monument has a 107 foot walkway leading to the monument designed by Hammath Billings. The monument is made of massive granite and can be found on Allerton Hill overlooking the harbor and the town of Plymouth from the northwest. The National Monument was dedicated to the Forefathers in August 1889. It has a 36 foot high figure of a lady sitting on a 45 foot high pedestal with her hand uplifted to heaven. This figure stands for "faith", which our Forefathers had to have, to endure the first harsh years of their "life" in the new world.

If you are visiting Plymouth, Mass, take a stroll along the walkway, stand a few minutes and listen to the ocean, feel the breeze and reminiscence the times our Pilgrim families walked the streets, and how many times they probably climbed this hill to over-look the bay. Thanks to Hampton Hotel for helping with the preservation of this monument for future generations to enjoy.
